SmallPDF charges up to $15/month, forever, to do things your computer can do for free — and it uploads your documents to their servers to do it. PDFsmith does the same jobs locally, offline, with zero telemetry, for a one-time $29.
This is the full pricing breakdown: what SmallPDF actually costs over one, two and three years, what PDFsmith gives you for $29 paid once, and the honest cases where the subscription is still the right call.
What SmallPDF actually costs you
At $12–15/mo, one SmallPDF subscription adds up to $144 every year — $432 over a three-year window, for software you stop owning the day you cancel. PDFsmith is $29 the day you buy it, and the meter never runs again.
| PDFsmith | SmallPDF | |
|---|---|---|
| Sticker price | $29 once | $12–15/mo |
| Cost after 1 year | $29 | $144 |
| Cost after 2 years | $29 | $288 |
| Cost after 3 years | $29 | $432 |
Three years in, the gap is $403 — and every year after that adds another $144 to the subscription side of the ledger.

What you get for $29, once
Merge, split, rotate, watermark & convert PDFs offline. No uploads, ever. The highlights:
- 🔗 Merge PDFs — Drag-drop any number of PDFs, reorder them in the list, combine into one file.
- ✂️ Split PDF — Extract any page ranges (1-2 | 3 | 4-6) into separate new PDFs.
- 🔄 Rotate pages — 90° / 180° / 270°, all pages or a specific range, batched across files.
- 💧 Watermark — Text (position, size, opacity, diagonal) or image stamp — batch across files.
Two and a half months of SmallPDF pays for PDFsmith outright. Everything after that is money you keep.
Switching is 3 steps
- Buy once on Whop. One-time $29. You get the signed Windows installer — no account with us, no subscription to remember to cancel.

- Drop in your PDFs. Merge, split, rotate, watermark or convert — everything happens on your machine, instantly, offline.
When paying SmallPDF is still the right call
Being straight about it: the subscription earns its keep in three situations. If your team is large enough that SmallPDF's collaboration features, permissions and admin controls are genuinely load-bearing; if your workflow is built on its integrations and leaving means rebuilding that plumbing; or if you have enterprise requirements — SSO, audit logs, SLAs, a vendor to call — that a pay-once app doesn't come with. Everyone else is paying $12–15/mo for a job that runs fine on hardware they already own.
If that's you, PDFsmith is $29, once. For the deeper dive, read the PDFsmith vs SmallPDF head-to-head or the full SmallPDF comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Is it really free on GitHub?
Yes. The full source code is MIT-licensed at github.com/bensblueprints/pdf-toolkit-mvp and always will be. Buying gets you the signed Windows installer, 1-click setup and updates — pure convenience, zero lock-in.
Do my PDFs get uploaded anywhere?
No. All processing runs locally with pdf-lib, a pure-JavaScript library. The app makes no network calls at all — you can run it with Wi-Fi off.
What platforms does it run on?
The packaged installer is for Windows. The MIT source runs anywhere Electron does (Windows, macOS, Linux) if you build it yourself with Node 18+.
Can it edit text inside a PDF?
No — and we'd rather tell you that upfront. PDFsmith covers merge, split, rotate, watermark, images-to-PDF and metadata. For rewriting body text inside an existing PDF you still need a full editor like Acrobat.
Is this a subscription in disguise?
No. $29 once. No renewal, no license server phoning home, no "lifetime deal" fine print. The app keeps working forever, even offline.
